Winter in Obuse runs from December through mid-February, with an average temperature of 12ºC. Snow does accumulate but only rarely as much as a meter. The season’s biggest traditional event is the Yasu-ichi market held on 14 and 15 January. The market features many sellers of Daruma dolls, which people purchase to bring good fortune and good health, coming from all over the surrounding area. Winter is also the season when sake is fermented at local breweries.
